Boosting durian exports
Since September 2022, Vietnam's durian has been officially exported to the Chinese market. Also from here, this fruit opens up many new opportunities for our country's fruit and vegetable industry. It is forecasted that this year, Vietnam can earn 1 billion USD from durian export.
According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, our country's durian has the advantage of abundant output, year-round harvest, and faster shipping time to China than Thailand. In the first 5 months of the year, export fresh durian output reached over 65,000 tons, up 41% over the whole of last year. The rate of durian export to the Chinese market is 97%.
The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association believes that in order to compete in the Chinese market, Vietnamese durian needs to focus on investing in improving quality, design and branding.
Promote durian from local festival
Not only focusing on the Chinese market, localities and businesses are also focusing on finding other potential markets. Trade promotion and product promotion activities will bring Vietnamese fruits further, and at the same time develop a stable growing area.
Strengthening the promotion and introduction of typical agricultural products in each locality is also a way to consume agricultural products more conveniently.
"Chau Thanh durian, connect - reach out" is the theme of the district-scale festival, organized and coordinated for the first time by Cai Tau Ha town cluster, Chau Thanh district, Dong Thap. Gardeners, who were used to farming, now become proficient salesmen.
Mr. Doan Thanh Liem - Phu Huu commune said: "I also want to connect many businesses, because Chau Thanh has developed a large durian area with good productivity, so I want to connect to export to many countries".
Chau Thanh district has nearly 990 hectares of durian. In order to improve the value of this fruit in the direction of export, the locality focuses on training and improving farming skills for growers. Currently, the district has 27.8 hectares of VietGAP certification; 39 planting area codes with an area of more than 330 hectares for export.
Mr. Phan Thanh Dung - Vice Chairman of Chau Thanh District People's Committee, Dong Thap said: "Recently, we had an initial contact, a memorandum of understanding to discuss time, seasonality and output for long-term connection. long".
A new feature in Chau Thanh district is the direction of gardeners to grow durian varieties with high economic value, in order to create a separate market segment. For example, Mon Thon variety has a selling price of up to 110,000 VND/kg, with the advantage of being able to transport long distances.
In the past 7 years, durian trees have taken root in the land of Chau Thanh, Dong Thap, thereby helping many gardeners bring high income. According to Phu Nong Hoi Quan people, with only 1 hectare of durian cultivation of Mon Thon variety, many gardeners earn more than 2 billion VND/year.
Long road for durian
In order for promotional activities to find new markets and promote products effectively, product quality assurance needs to be focused to calculate the long-term for durian fruit. Gardeners, cooperative groups and cooperatives need to have careful calculation and consideration in the farming process, helping to increase their competitiveness in the coming time.
Mr. Tuan is one of the first durian growers in Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province. Before embarking on this high economic value crop, he studied the farming process in many places and chose organic solutions for production. Recently, he cooperated with the gardener next door to register the planting area code and prepare to establish a durian farmer's association to help each other.
"Farmers, before doing something, also have to study and compare each region. Before I grow durian, I also go to learn many places, compare my land is suitable or not, whether it is safe or not," Mr. Tuan shared.
With a high selling price, durian is now becoming the number one choice when farmers need to renovate mixed gardens or convert inefficient rice land. Compared with other localities, farmers in My Long commune, Cao Lanh district have more advantages when converting thanks to durian cooperatives stationed in the area, helping farmers have support when needed.
With an area of more than 100 hectares of durian currently, managing 4 planting area codes, My Long Cooperative has many partners to directly export durian to foreign countries.
The whole province of Dong Thap currently has more than 2,600 hectares of durian and is also continuing to increase similarly in many places in the country. It is forecasted that in the next few years, when the new orchards start to bear fruit, the pressure of supply and demand will be very high. Therefore, gardeners need to actively produce at low cost, strengthen the consumption link now to minimize damage.
