Startled at the price of durian

People in the West and Central Highlands still race to grow durian because the price is too high. Fear of the vicious cycle of planting - chopping is still ahead.

The area of durian trees in the whole Central Highlands region is more than 40,000 ha and has not stopped. Meanwhile, in the West, the area of durian growing is also increasing day by day.

If about a month ago, the price of durian in the western provinces reached 210,000 VND/kg, now it is only 80,000 - 120,000 VND/kg. Despite the ups and downs, gardeners still massively cut down other trees to grow durian despite the recommendations of the authorities.

Unclear information about the durian market

While planting and pruning branches for a four-year-old durian garden of 120 trees, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Giao (Hoa Dong commune, Krong Pak, Dak Lak) could not hide her hope for a garden planted on her coffee tree replanting area. associate position.

If 1ha of coffee earns at most 100-200 million VND, durian can be 10 times higher. "This year the garden is for divination harvest, next year will start to harvest the main crop, the family will improve their lives a lot thanks to this durian area," Ms. Giao expected.

Meanwhile, on March 13, Mr. Luong Van Han, chairman of the board of directors of Phu Quy Cooperative - Tien Giang province, said that traders buy from the garden of cooperative members about 75,000 VND. /kg for Ri6 durian and more than 110,000 VND/kg of monthong durian. This price has nearly halved from more than a month ago.

According to the traders' explanation, the price goes up and down depending on the purchase price from China in batches. And most of the gardeners, even the cooperative owners are very ignorant about information and only listen to the information from traders, the Chinese market has reduced prices.

However, according to some gardeners, although the price has decreased by about 50%, durian cultivation is still very profitable. This is also the reason why they, despite the recommendations, massively cut down other crops to grow durian.

All kinds of communication, persuasion

Commenting on the increase in durian acreage, leaders of the agricultural sector expressed concern about the risk of people suffering the consequences first, but there were no sanctions to force people to follow directions. But what did they do?

Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Dak Nong province, affirmed that many documents have been sent to localities to prevent the expansion of the area outside the planning.

According to Mr. Tuan Anh, the province's plan to develop only about 7,000 hectares of durian but now more than 6,100 hectares. Although the area has not exceeded the planning, but with the current durian price too attractive, people are still racing to destroy coffee and pepper to grow durian, which is very worrying.

"In addition to the text, the department also organizes seminars on local farmers' associations. In which, they will talk about market forecasts, expertise in durian care, suitable land areas... Since then, it is recommended that people do not, because of the high price, ignore durian cultivation, leading to great consequences later," said Tuan Anh.

From another perspective, Mr. Le Van Thanh, head of the Sub-department of Cultivation and Plant Protection - Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Dak Lak, said that there is no sanctions to force people to stop growing durians and open wide area. According to him, the department has many documents to advise people not to expand the area in unsuitable areas.

"I can't force people to plant or not plant this or that tree because of their land. However, the province is also completing a project on a concentrated planting area for fruit trees, including durian.

Through the project, a number of supporting mechanisms and policies will also be developed to encourage people to plant fruit trees in the right planning area. People who grow durian outside the area recommended by the project will not be supported," Thanh said.

At a recent seminar, Vice Chairman of Cai Be District People's Committee (Tien Giang Province) Phan Thanh Son admitted that the locality was very worried when people massively planted durian.

Because this locality alone, in the past time, from a locality that mainly grows rice, or fruit trees are mainly Thai jackfruit and mango, now the durian area alone is about 7,000 hectares out of a total of 22,000 hectares. fruit tree area of the district.

Mr. Son said that it is normal for farmers to earn billions from durian trees, so the area keeps increasing.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Hoai Duong, director of Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared how and reality: the province's durian area has exceeded 5,000 - 6,000ha, farmers do not follow the price. but expand the area.

"The Department focuses on supporting farmers to apply organic, biological and high-quality technical solutions to improve durian production efficiency. The province also builds concentrated durian growing areas, creating linkages. cooperation in production, processing and consumption of products, thereby helping to make durian production more stable and sustainable," said Mr. Duong.

Needs durian care standards to increase quality

Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, chairman of Krong Pak Fruit Cooperative (Dak Lak), affirmed that durian should not be expanded, but should have a standard care process to bring high efficiency to exported durian fruit. official export.
